    CasualNon PastAffirmativeSentence EndingDeclarativeMusic & Entertainment

This phrase is like telling someone what to do. It can sound strong. You can add 'I think' or small words like 'yo' or 'ne' to make it softer. This makes it sound more like a friendly suggestion.

This is different from '〜たらどうか'. That is a soft suggestion. '〜ほうがいい' is stronger advice. It is also different from '〜べきだ'. '〜べきだ' means you really must do something. It is a duty. '〜ほうがいい' is just a good idea, not a duty.

Watch out: When you say someone should do something, use the past tense form of the verb. For example, say "tabeta hou ga ii" (ate it is better). Do not say "taberu hou ga ii" (eat it is better). But for negative advice, use the "nai" form.

Don't use this when you want to say "I should have done that." For example, "I should have studied more" is not said with this grammar.
