This phrase is like a camera zooming out. It shows something moving away from you. Or it shows something changing over time, moving into the future.
This is different from 〜てくる. 〜ていく means something moves away from you. It can be a physical move. Or it can be time moving forward. 〜てくる means something moves towards you. It can be a physical move. Or it can be time coming to now.
Watch out: Do not use 〜ていく for things that changed until now. For example, say 'The world changed a lot' as '世界は大きく変わってきた'. Do not say '世界は大きく変わっていった'. That means the change finished in the past. 〜てきた connects the past change to now.
