Imagine 'に' as a little arrow. It points to where something is. It also points to where something goes. This lesson focuses on these two uses. But 'に' can do many other things too. It can show when something happens. It can show who gets something. It can show why you do something. It can even show what something becomes. It is a very busy word.

This is different from 'de'. 'Ni' shows where something is. It shows where someone is. 'De' shows where an action happens. For example, 'I am at the library' uses 'ni'. 'I study at the library' uses 'de'.

Watch out: Don't use 'に' for where an action happens. For example, 'レストランに食べます' is wrong. Use 'で' instead. Say 'レストランで食べます' for 'eat at the restaurant'.
