This phrase means something is so amazing or so bad, you cannot even find the right words to describe it. It is like saying 'it was beyond words'.

This is different from "〜極まりない" (kiwamarinai). That one is more formal. You see it in writing more. It often describes bad things. This is also different from "〜てたまらない" (te tamaranai). That one shows feelings you cannot control. It needs the "te-form" of a verb. This phrase describes how extreme a state is.

Don't use this when you talk about actions. For example, you cannot say "indescribably run." This grammar works with words that show a feeling or a quality. It works with i-adjectives. It works with na-adjectives without "na." It works with nouns. The word must be something that can be very strong. It must be something that can be extreme. You cannot use it with words like "desk."

    〜い / 〜かった

This is the basic form of an い-adjective. It describes a quality of something. You use it for present or past qualities.

    〜だ / 〜だった

This means 'is' or 'was'. It is the casual way to say 〜です and 〜でした.
