    FormalNon PastAffirmativePrenominalDeclarativeWork & CareerCore Concepts

This form is plain. There is a polite form, 'お/ご~になります'. Many verbs have special respectful forms. These are often used instead. For example, '召し上がる' is more common for 'to eat'. It is used instead of 'お食べになる'.

Watch out: Do not use this form for yourself. It is for showing respect to others. For example, you cannot say "I will return" using this form. Also, be careful with the prefixes. Use "お" for most Japanese verbs. Use "ご" for words that come from Chinese.

Don't use this when you talk about your own actions. For example, don't say "I read" using this form. This form shows respect for someone else. You use it for their actions. You do not use it for your actions. For your own actions, use humble language. Humble language is like "o/go~suru." The "o" part is for Japanese verbs. The "go" part is for Chinese words used as verbs. For example, "o-yomi ni naru" is for "read." "Go-renraku ni naru" is for "contact."
