    This grammar shows kindness. Someone does something good for you. Or they do it for someone close to you. Think of it like a gift. It's a gift of action.

    This is different from "te ageru." With "te ageru," you do something for someone. It is also different from "te morau." With "te morau," you get someone to do something for you. This is also different from "te kudasaru." You use "te kudasaru" when a higher-status person does something for you.

    Watch out: Do not use this form when you do something for someone else. For example, say "I will help you" with "手伝ってあげる". This form is for when someone does something for *you* or your group.

    〜てあげる

    To do an action for someone as a favor, from the giver's perspective.

    〜てもらう

    This means someone does a favor for you. You get help from them. It is good for you.

    Less formal alternatives(1)

    〜てくださる

    A respectful expression indicating that someone of higher status performs an action as a favor for the speaker or someone in the speaker's in-group. It is the respectful equivalent of '~てくれる'.

    て形

    This is a special form of words. You use it to connect actions or ideas. It can mean "and then," "because," or "by doing something."

    〜に (indirect object)

    This word shows who gets something. It shows who an action or feeling is for.
