Imagine 'に' like an arrow pointing. It shows who or what the action is aimed at. For example, 'meet [to] a friend' or 'kind [to] people.'

The particle "に" is different from "を". "を" shows the direct object. This is the thing that gets the action. "に" shows the indirect object. This is who or what receives the thing. "に" is also different from "と". "と" means you do something with someone. "に" means you do something to or for someone.

Watch out: When you get something from a person, you usually use に. For example, 'I got a book from the teacher' is 先生に本をもらった. You can use から, but に is more common for people.
