PoliteNon PastAffirmativeSentence EndingRequestCore ConceptsWork & Career

This grammar can mean two things. It can mean 'make someone do something'. Or it can mean 'let someone do something'. The situation tells you which meaning it is. For example, 'The teacher made the student stand up' is making someone do something. 'I let my child play in the park' is letting someone do something. You can add '〜てあげる' to make it clear you mean 'let'.

This is different from '〜させられる' and '〜てもらう'. '〜させる' shows you make someone do something. '〜させられる' means you were forced to do something. For example, 'I was made to work'. '〜てもらう' means someone did something good for you. You are thankful for it. For example, 'I had them help me'.

Watch out: The small word you use for the person who does the action changes. It depends on the verb. If the verb needs a direct object (like 'eat' or 'do'), use に. Example: I made my brother do homework. If the verb does not need a direct object (like 'run' or 'sleep'), use を. Example: I made my brother run.

Don't use this when you want to say you do something yourself. For example, don't say "私は食べさせる" when you mean "I eat."
